IOGEAR has a long standing commitment to going green, planting over 390,000 trees across America already, with intentions to plant even more! And to help boost the number of trees we will plant, we are asking for your help, in return you’ll be entered in a contest to win a $50 prize! From simply becoming our Fan on Facebook, to inviting your friends, to taking a photo of what you’re doing that’s green could make you a winner. More information on how to enter can be found here.

Source

Winning the contest will be awesome of course, not only for you but for the environment! But you don’t have to wait for the contest to end to start Going Green today nor should you stop your green efforts when Earth Day is past. We’ve put together a list of 49 extremely helpful, energy saving and earth friendly tips for you to [link to previous tips article here]. As if that’s not enough, IOGEAR has Green technology built into several products, filling two needs at once — providing a better planet to live in and fulfilling your technology needs.

If you have more than one computer setup in your home or office, stop using two separate computer monitors for them. The electrical draw on them costs both the environment and your wallet monthly. Instead, try one of IOGEAR’s KVM Switches, designed to share one keyboard, video display and mouse between two or more computers. These economical and highly efficient devices will save electricity, boost productivity and clean a monitor off your desk, giving you more room to work! And while you are at it, donate that extra monitor to your favorite charity.

Because our busy lives are always on the go and technology isn’t just around us in the home or office, IOGEAR has products aimed to help fill your mobile needs too. The Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit is designed to keep your hands on the wheel, your eyes on the road. Since the device utilizes solar technology, there is not need to plug into your cigarette lighter for power so the device doesn’t put a strain on your cars alternator or battery, which would result in a lower miles per gallon average. As if that wasn’t cool enough, the Solar Bluetooth Caller Announce Hands Free Kit downloads your phone’s contact list via Bluetooth and then, on an incoming call, will announce who it is. This again keeps you focused on the road and not fumbling around with your phone. Like The Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit, this device too is solar powered to be environmentally friendly.

Going Green does not mean a sacrifice in how you live your life or how you do business; in many ways green technology will enhance your day-to-day life. Don’t forget, take a photo of yourself Going Green and it could win you a $50 prize!

Until a few years ago, the term Going Green didn’t mean much; today it’s a standard by which many of us try to live our lives. Going Green is not all or nothing, it simply involves the choices you make in how you live on a day-to-day basis, and you’ll be surprised at the impact it makes on the environment, and in many cases, your wallet too. Additionally, Going Green means bringing back traditions that your parents and their parents used to do, so if these tips below aren’t enough, ask them! The positive impact you can make on the environment by implementing even a few of these will be profound if everyone joins the cause.

Without further adieu, on to the tips:

1. Plant a Tree – It’s good for the air, can keep you cool and can increase your property value.

2. Don’t Pre-Heat the Oven – Unless needed, just turn the oven on after you put the dish in it. Also, to see if it’s finished, just look through the glass instead of opening it.

3. Adjust Your Thermostat – Every degree lower in the winter or higher in the summer is a 10% decrease on your energy bill.

4. Stop Paper Bank Statements – Why waste paper getting your bank statement mailed to you when you can just check it out online.

5. Use Rechargeable Batteries – Even though it will take a good investment to buy these, you will find yourself gaining your investment back in no time.

6. Purchase Local Produce – Consider how much energy it takes to ship the produce around the country or the world. If you have the option to buy local, do it.

7. Energy Efficient Windows – Installing the right windows in your house can reduce energy consumption and energy costs.

8. Reusable Bags – Next time you are at the gas station or local retailer, tell them you don’t need a bag for your purchase or bring your own reusable one.

9. Use Less Napkins – When dining out, only take napkins you will use. Too many people throw away unused napkins when they are done eating out.

10. Donate Food – Go through your pantry once a month and collect what you will not use that will be expiring soon. Donate the food to a local food pantry or homeless shelter.

11. Change to Fluorescent Bulbs – If every house in the United States changed all of their light bulbs to fluorescent bulbs in their house, it would be equivalent to taking one million cars off the streets.

12. Don’t Rinse – Skip rinsing your plates before putting them into the dishwasher. On average you will save 15 gallons of water per load. Plus, you will save time.

13. Hang Clothes Outside to Dry – Get a clothesline or rack to dry your clothes. Your clothes will last longer and you will save money.

14. Turn Off Computers at Night – You will save an average of four cents a day which adds up to $14.60 a year. Even better, unplug electronics before you go to bed at night to save even more.

15. Use Both Sides of Paper – If you have a printer with a double sided print option then you should use it. You will save half of the amount of paper you would have normally used. Then when you’re done, take it to the recycle bin.

16. Get Rid of Baths – Instead of baths take showers. On average you will save about half the amount of water that you would have if you were taking a bath.

17. Don’t Get Bottled Water – Instead of bottled water, get a reusable container to carry your water. Also, you can get a filter to make your home tap taste more like bottled water.

18. Turn the water off when you brush your teeth or shave.

19. Shorten Your Shower – Every minute you cut from your shower is roughly 5 gallons of water.

20. Recycle Glass – If you do not recycle glass, it will take a million years to decompose.

21. Use the Warm or Cold Setting on the Washer – instead of the hot cycle. This will save a lot of energy each year.

22. Turn Off Your Lights – when you are not using them, especially in the daytime when you can simply open a window.

23. Get Rid of Junk Mail – There are many services that can help you get rid of junk mail responsibly. That will lead to a lot less trees being cut down to take up room in your mailbox.

24. Use Matches Instead of Lighters – Lighters are usually considered disposable so they will most likely end up in landfills. Instead, use the cardboard matches which are much more eco-friendly because they are made of recycled material.

25. Don’t Get a Paper Phone Book – Instead of getting a paper phone book, use an online directory instead.

26. Give Things Away – Take things that you are not going to wear or use and give it to a charity or someone who will use it. Post it at craigslist.com or freecycle.org. Especially during this recession, there are many families in need of items you may be throwing away.

27. Go To a Car Wash – Going to a car wash is a lot more water efficient then washing your car at home.

28. Pay Your Bills Online – If every house in the US did this, we would save 18 million trees every year.

29. Get a Reusable Bag – You can’t recycle plastic bags, instead get yourself a reusable bag so that you won’t have to worry about carrying your groceries.

30. Do Errands in Bulk – Make a list of the things you have to do and see if you can fit a couple of those things together in one ride.

31. Inflate Your Tires – If your tires are inflated to their recommended levels at all times your fuel efficiency will increase.

32. Wrap Presents Creatively – Without going out to get wrapping paper, you can use newspaper or an old map. Just get creative!

33. Walk or Ride Your Bike When You Can – If you have to go somewhere close, consider riding your bike or walking there instead of your car. It’s better on the environment and healthier.

34. Install Solar Panels, Fuel Cells, or Wind Turbines – Produce renewable energy for your home or business. Many states offer tax credits.

35. Install a Water Runoff System – Collect runoff from rain and reuse it to water your landscape or garden.

36. Buy Hybrids or Electric Vehicles – When buying your next vehicle, consider fuel efficiency or an electric option. Prices are dropping for these eco technologies.

37. Get a Recycle Bin – Place a recycle bin next to your trash. If your trash service does not take recyclables, find a recycling center near you.

38. Reuse – Find items around your house to use in art projects or redecorating. There are many creative ways to reuse.

39. Reupholster Furniture – Find a company to reupholster your furniture instead of buying new. You’re current furniture may be built better than newer furniture and will save you money while giving your room a new look.

40. Plan Your Meals – Cook only what your family will consume or make enough for leftovers. Avoid throwing away food. Consider the amount of energy it takes to get all those items on your plate. Fertilizers, fuel for growing and harvesting, fuel to transport to your local grocer, fuel to drive to and from the store and fuel to cook your food.

41. Use Towels or Cloth Napkins – Clean up your mess with a cloth towel instead of paper towels. Use cloth napkins while dining at home instead of paper towels.

42. Buy Cloth Diapers – It may be messier and more of a hassle, however, a newborn will use close to 3,000 diapers in their first year of life.

43. Buy Green – When considering purchases of similar products, go with the company with a green initiative.

44. Alternative Transportation – Plan your next vacation using a train rather than a plane. Trains use less fuel per person than a plane and can be cheaper.

45. Public Transportation – If you live near a subway or bus stop, use it instead of your car. Also consider the health benefits of walking.

46. Are They Open? – If you think a store might be closed, make a phone call or check online first before driving there.

47. Condiments – When the cashier at a restaurant asks if you would like condiments, tell them how many packets of the condiment you need rather than being given more than is needed.

48. Avoid Paper/Plastic Plates/Cups/Silverware – Use reusable utensils and dish-ware to save on resources.

49. Stop Smoking – It takes energy and resources to grow, manufacture, package and ship tobacco. Plus cigarette butts take time to decompose, filling our landfills.

50. Grow Your Own Food – Build a garden. No fuel needed to transport across the country or the world. Besides, it just tastes better and costs less.

How many of these are you already doing? More importantly, how many do you plan on incorporating into your life? Please add your tips in the blog comments below or on Facebook.

With an established commitment to Going Green, IOGEAR wants to reward you for the choices you make, and give you a chance to win a $50 prize! Currently IOGEAR has planted 400,000 trees, nearly half way to their goal of 1 million trees to help better our environment.
As Earth Day approaches, we thought it would be an ideal time to explore some of the options available for disposing of electronics. While it’s easy to leave an old TV on the sidewalk or toss a cellphone in the garbage, these actions have consequences. Given the earth’s ever-increasing population, it is critical that we all make efficient use of space and natural resources. Using green products and engaging in green practices, like the responsible disposal of electronics through community based electronic recycling programs, will help ensure the future availability of natural resources – a benefit for everyone.

Source

One of the best examples of this shift is the evolution of recycling. IOGEAR and many other manufacturers are responding to consumer demand by creating products that come in recycled/recyclable packaging, are sustainably produced and made with components that have less negative impact on the planet. Another aspect of consumer society that is constantly changing is technology. New and improved models of everything from mobile phone accessories to Internet-connected TVs are being introduced regularly with each version a little bigger, sharper or more powerful. So it makes sense that at some point, when new technology arises, we must consider green solutions for disposing of technologies that are now obsolete.

Much of these old and outdated electronics end up becoming what’s called “e-waste,” and e-waste can be dangerous. For example, as we outfit our homes with new flat screen TVs, millions of old analog sets make their way to the dump, each of which contains about five pounds of lead. And that doesn’t even account for the tons and tons of plastics, metals, and other potentially-recyclable material that contribute to the ever-growing mountains of e-waste when electronics aren’t disposed of properly.

It was only a matter of time before the two got together and were tagged with a cool name: e-cycling, recycling electronics to keep them from becoming hazardous e-waste. But like any recycling, there are all sorts of stipulations and rules that must be abided by in order to e-cycle properly. Here are some of the basics you should remember to make sure that when you e-cycle to make room for new technology, you’re doing so in a way that will have the most impact.

1. Donating

Even if you’ve upgraded to the latest and greatest device, your old one could have a second life with someone who would be happy to have it. Did you get a new computer? Many schools are in need of them and can make use of your old one. New cell phone? Old phones can be donated to women in situations of domestic violence. Old TVs, CD players, DVD players and VCRs can be used by nursing homes, your local library, hospitals, and other organizations that rely on donations. You can feel good about giving your used electronics to someone who can get use out of them—and that they’re not sitting in a landfill for years to come. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) even offers a list of computer/electronics recycling resources.

2. Check with your city

Just as with recycling basic household waste, different cities and towns have different e-cycling policies. Some urban communities have exemplary e-cycling programs (check out The 4th Bin for a fantastic example in NYC, or Green Monster e-Cycling in CT). Contact waste management vendors in your community to see what can be done in terms of e-cycling: what can be recycled, where it goes, etc. Many big-box electronics retailers, like Best Buy and Staples, also offer recycling services for your old electronics.

(New to recycling? Not sure where to start? Check out Earth 911 to find out where you can recycle in any zip code!)

3. Look into repairs

Unfortunately, many electronics are “designed for the dump”: made in such a way that they are all but impossible to repair, and when repairs are possible, they’re often more expensive than just buying a replacement item. (Watch The Story of Electronics for some interesting info on this.) However, if there’s a minor problem with an otherwise perfectly-good appliance, take it to your local electronics repair shop and see what can be done. If repairs are possible (and cost-effective), you’ll be extending the life of the appliance, keeping it out of a landfill that much longer—and maybe saving a little green while being green, too.

4. Buy green

When new technology is needed, make sure you’re buying the greenest you can. Look for the Energy Star rating on electronics; this lets you know that your purchase is energy-efficient, so it will have less of an impact during the time that you use it. Another great resource is Climate Counts, a non-profit that scores various companies on their environmental practices. Try to purchase from companies ranked as Striding, meaning they are making a concerted and valuable effort to be environmentally conscious in their production and how they do business.

5. Raise your voice

Now that you’re all fired up over e-cycling, do something about it! Much progress has been made in recent years in terms of green technology and e-cycling, but we still have a long way to go. If you don’t have e-cycling in your town, reach out to other like-minded people in the community and see what can be done about instating an e-cycling program where you live. If you’re concerned about the amount of toxins used to make computers, TVs and the like, write to electronics manufacturers and express your concerns, and make an effort only to purchase electronics made in the most environmentally responsible and efficient manner possible. Tech companies, like all others, rely on their consumers buying the products to turn a profit, and if enough people speak up, they will make the changes their consumers demand. You hold more power as a consumer than you know!

E-cycling only works if we truly view it as a cycle: one that must be started responsibly and dealt with responsibly through each phase of a product’s life. Electronics that are built with safe and renewable materials and resources, used to their fullest extent, and then passed on to the next stage of their cycle in a sustainable manner (whether through donating or recycling) will have a much smaller negative impact on our planet.

You don’t have to tie yourself to a tree to celebrate Earth Day, simple actions can make a difference if everyone participates all year long. E-cycling, get in the habit.

Green living means different things to different people. Some folks pursue a completely sustainable lifestyle, recycling everything and surrounding themselves in green building materials while monitoring and negating carbon emissions to reduce their footprint. For others, not littering and recycling paper and plastic goods is enough of an effort to help the planet.

No matter what your view on green living, harnessing power from the sun to make life more convenient is a good idea. With increasingly mobile lifestyles and smart phones turning our cars into moving offices, the demand for hands-free mobile phone accessories has never been higher. Combine this with recent legislation in many states that makes handheld cell phone use and texting illegal while driving; and finding a solution to hands and clutter free in-car communications can even become a legal issue.

Fortunately, IOGEAR is a strong advocate for green technology and has crafted mobile phone accessory solutions that make driving safer, a philosophy that inspired the Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit (GBHFK231). Our cars are filled with enough clutter before we have multiple charging cables running from the dashboard. The hands-free car kit is an excellent passenger since it uses the sun’s solar energy to wirelessly place and receive phone calls from Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones while the driver concentrates on navigating through jumping reindeer, holiday revelers and tipsy sledders who may be enjoying the winter season.

Great as a belated gift for busy professionals or yakking teens, our friends from TigerDirectTv.com even created a video about the Solar Bluetooth Hands-free Car Kit that provides more details below. IOGEAR will also have a newer version of the solar car kit, now with caller announce text-to-speech technology (GBHFK331) along with other USB, KVM and convergence through connectivity products on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
Now that the weather is cooling and the leaves are beginning to fall, homeowners are preparing for the increased costs of keeping their homes heated and running throughout the colder months that lie ahead. This can lead to higher energy expenditures, but there are ways around that gloomy conclusion, we promise.

In our ongoing effort to keep with our Green Initiative, we’ve gathered up some reminders of simple ways to help you reduce energy consumption, and your energy bill, so you don’t have to sit in the dark and freeze in order to save money this winter.

1. Make sure your heating system is in good condition. Before turning on the heat this winter, change your heating system’s air filter. Take a peek at your ducts and seal up any holes in the joints using shiny foil tape with a UL-181 label or with duct mastic. In case you are wondering what duct mastic is, it’s a flexible sealant that varies in consistency from a pasty consistency similar to mashed potatoes to a much smoother consistency reminiscent of yogurt.

2. Keep that thermostat at 68°F. For every degree you lower your heat in the 60-degree to 70-degree range, you conserve 5% of your energy use. Instead of turning up the heat, throw on that Snuggie your grandmother gave you last Christmas and cuddle up with a loved one and some hot cocoa for extra warmth!

3. Just because summer is gone, doesn’t mean the sun is! According to Worldwatch, lighting consumes up to 34 percent of all electricity used in the U.S. During the day when there is some sunlight, open your curtains and let Mother Nature do the heating and the lighting. During the evening, pull the curtains closed to help stop heat from escaping through the glass and turn off all lights when you are not using them. Also consider replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) for additional savings when using the lights is unavoidable.

4. Seal around your windows and doors. Seal up any cracks or leaks in your window and doorframes with caulk. This can be purchased at local hardware stores for less than 10 bucks.

5. Keep the draft out! Seal up the areas under exterior doors that are prone to letting warm air escape. You can use a rolled up towel pressed against the bottom of the door; or, if you want to get a little creative, Wikihow has a great tutorial on how to make your own Draft Dodger with ease.

6. Do a little redecorating. Rearrange your rooms so that places where you sit and sleep are not near big windows. If your sofa or bed has to be near a big window, you can add a little warmth and flair with some heavy curtains over that window or a cheery wall hanging.

7. Use More Energy-efficient Appliances. According to the US Department of Energy, appliances eat up 17 percent of the average electricity bill. If you are shopping for new appliances, make sure to look for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star label before making a purchase. Energy Star appliances use between 10 and 50 percent less energy and water than their conventional counterparts.

8. Don’t turn off those ceiling fans – reverse them! Your fan is actually a great way to keep warm air circulating in your home. Most come equipped with a switch to reverse the direction that the blades turn. By flipping the switch and setting it on low, you can use your fan to push warm air that’s trapped up at the ceiling down to the living area.

Here at IOGEAR, we like to put our planet first, that’s why we stay true to our ongoing green initiative by applying earth-saving technological innovations to our product line. For instance, we create products that are 80% PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and BFR (brominated flame retardants) free – minimizing our eco-footprint is high on our list of doing our part to help Mother Earth.

In what ways are you helping prolong our planet? Will you be incorporating any of our energy saving suggestions in your home? What tip did you find to be the most useful? Do you have any suggestions to share? Tell us here on our blog, or our company Facebook page!

If you’ve been keeping up to speed on the latest announcements coming out of the tech world, you’re probably aware of Google’s recent news stemming from its latest project – the hands-free vehicle. Yep, Google’s been testing computer-operated vehicles for a while now – in fact these cars have traveled an incredible 140,000 miles on major California roads, navigating through traffic patterns and abiding by speed limits!

Equipped with video cameras, radar sensors and lasers, the cars’ computers are able to detect traffic and follow maps. During the testing phase, engineers would go along for the ride, ready to slam on the breaks or take the wheel if needed. The purpose behind this, you ask? Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt declared via the Google blog, “…prevent traffic accidents, free up people’s time and reduce emissions…”

This is just one more breakthrough in an ongoing global effort to help reduce unwanted collisions and fatalities on roads and highways. Google predicts that this new technology could help reduce traffic accidents and save about 600,000 lives a year worldwide. To top it, these cars will help reduce carbon emissions tremendously.

Of the same mindset, IOGEAR has been developing products aiming to reduce waste and increase car safety, as evidenced in our Solar Bluetooth Caller Announce Hands Free Car Kit. This puppy uses the sun’s rays to fuel itself and lets the driver focus on the road, able to make phone calls via voice command.

As time progresses, it will be interesting to see if Google’s hands-free vehicle becomes commonplace on our roads, as well as what other life-changing technologies will come to fruition to make our lives safer, and the planet greener.

What do you think about computer-operated vehicles? Do you think there are too many risks involved, or do you see them as remedying collisions? Let us know here on our blog, on Twitter or our Facebook page.

You probably don’t need us to tell you this, but texting and driving is bad, very bad! Everyone from Obama to Oprah to whoever writes those email forwards our mom sends us will tell you the same thing. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers who are texting can be more than 20 times more likely to crash than non-distracted drivers. Don’t let yourself fall into that category!

We know maximizing our time is crucial, right? We can refrain from texting and driving, which is illegal in many states, but sometimes talking and driving is unavoidable. That’s where we come in with our IOGEAR Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit. This bad boy lets you wirelessly place and receive calls on your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone while keeping your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. Oh, and it uses the sun’s rays to charge your phone, so you are helping Mother Earth simultaneously.

We think it’s pretty cool, and our friends at Smart Money magazine do too – they were nice enough to give the kit a nod in this article. They position our hands-free product alongside services for concerned parents such as Getizup.com and tXtBlocker.com, which allow parents to disable a cellphone once a car hits a certain speed, say 12-miles-per-hour. These are just some of the products on the market that are keeping our highways and roads a little bit safer.

What’s your strategy for taking calls when you’re in the car? Bluetooth? Headset? Let us know here on the blog, on Twitter or Facebook.

If you are looking for a great deal on the Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit, look no further than our own store. The coupon code promoi25 will get you 25% off until August 31, 2010. And, if you sign up to become an IOGEAR Club member, you’ll receive a 30% discount.

Green technology is all the rage in the tech space, and here at IOGEAR we love nothing more than to keep our finger on the green pulse. From Apple’s work-in-progress solar powered iPad and iPhone, to the grass-trimming goats Google has put to work, earth conscious companies are developing new ways to help our waning Mother Earth.

This week Cisco Systems announced the testing phase of their home energy management system, temporarily named the home energy controller. Despite the unsexy name, this is a pretty slick device which helps keep an eye on mounting energy costs. The controller’s digital readout helps people keep track of energy consumption throughout their home and do away with energy waste. Wasting energy is so passé, people.

Users can sign up for the system’s demand-response program, which provides rebates for shutting off the switches during peak times. It saves you money AND gives you the glow of being a green conscious American – all from one small control panel!

In case you are new to our blog, we here at IOGEAR have a vested interest in keeping up with the newest green technologies. We are doing our part to help our planet every day with a variety of products that cut back on energy usage – from energy saving convergence devices like KVM switches and Wireless AV kit to Solar BT hands free kits which harness the sun’s rays to power cell phones.

So, everyone, let’s start doing our part to stay up-to-speed, and hopefully adopt the latest green tech developments – it’s up to us.

What are you doing to incorporate green methods into your home or lifestyle?

Until next week, this is the IOGEAR team signing off. Stay green, readers.

Here at IOGEAR, we like to keep a finger on the ‘green pulse’ of the electronics industry. This week, the latest announcement from Apple caught our eco-friendly eye. If you’ve ever wondered what the green-conscious engineers at Apple have been cooking deep in the labs, read on!

Apple announced earlier this week that while they have yet to release a solar-powered gadget, their best and brightest brains are already working on incorporating solar power into popular items such as the iPad and iPhone.

( source )

Excitingly, a recently surfaced patent application from Apple shows that engineers have been investigating ways to embed solar cells under the touch screens of handheld devices. The patent, which was filed in September 2008, also calls for the use of “light channels” to direct light to a solar cell underneath a touch screen, potentially using a parabolic reflector. Put simply, a solar powered iPod could soon be winging its way to you!

Of course at IOGEAR, we’re no strangers to sun worshipping. Our popular Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit has been harnessing the sunshine since launch, and allows hands-free communication and cord-free charging. Allowing you to roll your car windows down and drive in the sun without having to worry about fumbling for cords, this kit allows for safe, clean and eco-friendly charging on the move.

We also believe it’s also important to be energy efficient in our homes. In an effort to conserve energy, we created the KVM switch to reduce energy consumption by eliminating the use of multiple computer monitors. This switch, along with other energy saving products designed for your home, can help make a noticeable difference on your next energy bill and we are happy to help lower that number with you.

From solar devices, to energy saving, to supporting the natural world through our partnership with Road to a Million Trees, we are excited to be doing our part to save energy and minimize the amount of waste produced – and we love seeing companies like Apple join in the green fun!

How are YOU doing your part to promote a greener tomorrow?

Cheers
The IOGEAR team
