The Friday That Is Black

November 15th, 2012

The Running of the Shoppers

This past summer we were treated to watching the world's best athletes compete in the Olympics. Next week, million's of Americans will be participating in a different type of competition: Black Friday shopping.

We've all seen the images of Pampalona-like stampedes into Wal-Mart stores at midnight and much like the running of the bulls, people get gored and run over. If you were unfortunate enough to be at this Wal-Mart location, you might have gotten an eye full of pepper spray.

Black Friday Rush

Blood, Sweat, and Tears

Those brave enough to do battle at retail locations across this country, gladiator-style, will be rewarded with some of the best deals of the year.

It's just a matter of sacrifice and preparation. This year, retailers are banking on individuals and families that will be spending the time normally reserved for Thanksgiving dinner, at their stores. Retailers are playing a game of one-upmanship as advertisement for deals have come sooner than ever. In fact, my inbox had Black Friday email previews before I had a chance to clean up pumpkin seeds and toilet paper from the front lawn.

Weapons of Choice

As a matter of preparation for battle, there are plenty of resources around the web that will help you get those deals. Most do the heavy lifting and compile all the ads in one place so you can determine where you'll be spending your hard earned time off work. Here's a list of sites that have helped me before I retired from competition:

If you're unwilling or unable to participate—perhaps a knee injury caused during the 2006 shopping season put you on the sideline-there are alternatives to address those shopping needs. Speaking on experience, most wives will not be willing to sleep outside a store overnight so you can get that sweet 42" HDTV for $199. The second best alternative are online retailers including Amazon and Shop IOGEAR that are having BF sales and let's not forget the all important Cyber Monday sales.

Thanksgiving is about gathering with family and friends and being thankful for all we have. Whether you're giving thanks over a turkey on the table or bundled up in a tent outside of Best Buy; well that's up to you.

Let the games begin!
