Christmas Decorations & Ideas

Christmas Village

Putting together Christmas villages is one of my favorite decorations for the holiday. Simply put, they are scale models of a small town in a winter wonderland. You will typically see a train running through these villages, but not all have trains. This is your chance to design what ever you want. Some villages can be placed under the Christmas tree or on a table. Which ever you prefer, you will have a wonderful time setting these up. If you do, it will be a memory your kids will talk about with their kids when they grow up and hopefully pass along the tradition. The video below is an example of what can be done if you put a lot of effort into it. It can get expensive, so start small and expand upon it every year.

Throughout the years, I've noticed that some stores are reducing their collection of Christmas village products. This makes it harder to find what you need. There are plenty of online retailers you can buy from if you can't find what you need in stores. For me, I like to make my scenes look as real as I possibly can. To do this, I don't buy the typical scenery from makers of Christmas village supplies. I will usually find supplies from scale model train suppliers as they provide higher quality products. Woodland Scenics is a great place to start. It's a popular brand that you can find at least a limited supply in some hobby stores.

Animated Light Displays

When I was a young lad, the family tradition was to drive around town and look at all the Christmas lights. It's a tradition I will also pass onto my children. For those of you Christmas buffs that go all out, adding an animated light display synchronized to music through an AM/FM channel can really put on display your love for Christmas. This can be an expensive and time consuming project, but the results can be absolutely stunning. Below is a video demonstrating what you can accomplish if you put in the effort.

Before implementing such a display, consider the costs, options, and time. Buying the system to the control the lights and the lights themselves can easily cost thousands of dollars, not to mention the electricity bill. For those of you who are not an electrician, you may consider hiring an electrician to supply adequate electricity or hire a professional to do so. Depending on where you live, there may be companies that have a turnkey system that can be installed in week. Many people with such displays will usually start months before Christmas so it can be ready for December. With such a big project, you should layout a schedule to make sure you are on track. Be sure to notify your neighbors about your display. Not only can the lights be a nuance, but the increased traffic to your neighborhood can cause grumpy neighbors.

Christmas Trees

What would Christmas be without a Christmas Tree? Smells can trigger nostalgic memories from wonderful family Christmases as it fills your home and creates new lasting memories for your children. If you are planning to put an artificial tree up this year, try adding artificial scents to give that feeling of a real Christmas Tree.

Just a reminder, be sure to make sure to put safety first this year. Christmas trees can go up in flames in seconds. Watch this video on fire safety with Christmas trees.

Christmas Movies

You know you have a favorite Christmas movie. We all do. Whether you are sitting down with your family or keeping your kids busy while you prepare for Christmas, movies are a necessity. You may know your favorite movie verbatim, but it's always great to watch once a year. You should never watch Christmas movies any other time of the year, otherwise you may get sick of it. Below is a list of some great Christmas movies to add to your watch list.

Christmas Music

Some of us love Christmas music and some of us hate it. I love Christmas music, but to keep it special, I always wait until Christmas ‘til I put on the music on. This helps me hold onto that good nostalgic feeling without getting sick of the ad nauseam. A few years ago, I searched online for my favorite Christmas classics and compiled a playlist. Below is a list of some wonderful Christmas music that will get your started. Just note that I love a lot of the classics (I guess 'classic' is relative to you though).
