Spring Cleaning With Your Photos

March 27th, 2013

These days, spring cleaning extends beyond those under-the-couch dust bunnies and into our digital devices and files – especially photos. We're snapping and sharing more photos than ever. Flicker users uploaded 518 million photos in 2012, an average of 1.42 million per day.

Even more staggering, on Facebook, users upload 300 million images a day. Before you start counting your own shots in the millions, try these tips to get them organized. You'll likely be surprised to learn how much more you can do with your photos when they're not hidden in a camera or a cellphone.

  1. Start by syncing to your computer to your phone or camera and edit as you go. If you have photo organizing software, such as Picasa, iPhoto or Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, update the caption information while your memory is still fresh.
  2. Unclutter your devices by storing photos on a cloud service. The online storage from Box can store up to 5 GB of files free and lets you access them anywhere from any device. Photobucket provides free, automatically photo and video uploads, and some editing tools.
  3. Once your photos are transferred to your computer, you can use IOGEAR's Wireless 1080p Computer to HD Display Kit to view them on your big screen TV from the comfort of your living room. Much better than viewing photos on your devices, the kit's ability to share all of your photos and videos on your TV screen is a great addition.

If you're planning to do some spring cleaning, don't forget to clean your tech tools. Making your laptops, cellphones, keyboards and computer monitors tidy inside and out helps them operate more efficiently and look a lot better, too. Some sensitive electronics require special care, outlined by Samsung.

  • Unplug or turn off whatever you're cleaning to avoid electric shock.
  • Skip the paper towels: Use a non-abrasive, non-electrostatic microfiber cloth to avoid scratching coatings on LCD screens.
