IOGEAR Seeks America’s Most Cable Cluttered Home~Wi-Fi specialist launches contest to help consumers clean up their home office [12-01-2003]

IOGEAR, a leading name in computer connectivity, has launched a nationwide contest in search of America’s most cable cluttered home office. The five consumers who submit a photo of the most ‘wired’ computer spaces will receive an IOGEAR Wi-Fi network kit ($289 value), which includes IOGEAR’s Wireless-G Broadband Gateway, USB Flex Adapter and Wireless Network Notebook Card, to help clean their home by wirelessly linking computers and other high-tech devices. The winning photos will be posted on IOGEAR’s Website at www.iogear.com. In addition to its contest, IOGEAR offers the following three tips on how to use new technology to organize computer equipment: Connect from anywhere in the home Wi-Fi technology eliminates the hassle of tangled cables and limited connectivity by allowing users to connect to the Internet from any location in the home and wirelessly network computers. With wireless networking, home users no longer have to roll out an Ethernet cable at multiple workstations in the house or spend hundreds of dollars on network cable installation and put holes in the walls and ceiling. Cables are not only an eyesore, but potentially dangerous if tripped over or chewed on by household pets. Wi-Fi can be easily implemented into many environments and integrates into existing networks. In addition, the cost of Wi-Fi technology is dropping, making it an affordable and convenient alternative to ‘wired’ networks. Wireless communications not only allow space to be saved, but it frees consumers from the restraints of cables. Clean up desktop clutter with KVMP (Keyboard, Video, Mouse, Peripheral sharing) switches Avoid having multiple monitors and mice scattered on a desk by investing in KVM technology. These cost-effective switches allow users to manage multiple computers with just one keyboard, monitor and mouse. Customers can simultaneously use old computers to perform less power-hungry chores, such as word processing, while utilizing newer systems for more advanced applications such as gaming, burning CDs or using graphic arts applications. Allow wireless devices to communicate Bluetooth technology provides freedom from wired connections by enabling links between computers, printers, mobile phones, handheld devices and other connectivity solutions for distances up to 330 feet (100 meters). By wirelessly linking and synchronizing Bluetooth devices, users can share and transfer data without cable restrictions. Applications made possible by Bluetooth include establishing a wireless home computer network with shared Internet access, wireless printing, transmitting photos from Bluetooth-enabled cell phones to computers, wirelessly synchronizing a PDA with a PC, using a PDA to reply to emails, or a cell phone to send faxes. “IOGEAR encourages consumers to spend some time this year cleaning up the mounds of cables that clutter their lives,” said Miranda Su, vice president of sales and marketing at IOGEAR, Inc. “With wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi now a reality, mobile device users can utilize its capabilities and access technology from anywhere in their home. This technology could ultimately eliminate messy desks, or cable-filled workstations found throughout homes.” IOGEAR launched its Wi-Fi product line in November 2003. The company is accepting contest entries from December 1 through December 31, 2003. The winners will be announced on January 16, 2004.
