IOGEAR’s Digital Scribe Translates Longhand Notes to Text [08-20-2007]

Transfers writing and drawings from paper to PC

Irvine, CA – August 20, 2007 – Handwritten memos and drawings can now be transferred from plain paper and edited on a computer with IOGEAR’s new Digital Scribe (GPEN100C). The product uses standard ink refills and enables longhand notes and sketches to be stored on a PC through a USB connection and converted into digital text. Ideal for to-do lists and phone numbers, it is compatible with virtually any writing surface and allows workers to create sticky notes on their desktops for quick and easy access. In addition, they can use it to set pop-up reminders for specified dates and times. “Our Digital Scribe aims to enhance the computing experience by intuitively transferring handwriting and drawings to a PC for digital use,” said Miranda Su, vice president of sales and marketing at IOGEAR. “By connecting our Scribe to a computer, written notes and memos are automatically captured and stored in digital format, reducing the potential for lost or misplaced pieces of paper or notepads.” The product is ideal for the avid note taker, such as doctors, lawyers and even students, who doesn’t have time to sit in front of a computer and type lengthy documents. By attaching an electronic receiver at the top of a notepad and connecting it to a computer through a USB port, an ultrasonic transmitter located in the base of the pen and an infrared sensor capture all hand movements. The handwriting optical character recognition (OCR) software installed on the PC is able to convert notes, including those written in cursive, into digital text and supports 10 different languages. It can also capture shapes and sketches and export them as JPEG images, eliminating the hassle of using cumbersome drawing tools on a computer. Additionally, Microsoft® Messenger users can write during instant messaging chat sessions with the Scribe, as well as transfer drawings. The Digital Scribe contains patented technologies and is compatible with Microsoft Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office™ programs 2000 and above. It is priced at $99.95 (MSRP) and available immediately from all major catalog and online resellers, as well as selected retail outlets, and comes with IOGEAR’s limited one-year warranty.
